In exchange I call you a despicable coward and to prove which of us is the best man I challenge you to a personal meeting. It is not the challenge to a duel in generally accepted sense, would not be legal, but boxing is legal in Illinois, as well as the fight. So I challenge you to a boxing match or fight in a typically American to prove which of us is the best man.
would prefer that this meeting will happen privately, so that can give you the lesson you deserve, and that is why I immediately made it clear that no challenge for the sake of publicity. Send a copy of this challenge to newspapers, simply because I have: no doubt that a - man - so coward to write to me what you wrote, would not respond unless forced to do so by the press. The heroic silence of the writer who attacked me without any provocation on my part on the Chicago Tribune does not leave any doubt as to his absolute lack of any talent worthy of a man. I feel quite satisfied, because I consider his silence as a tacit retraction and an admission that they are forced to accept, though not quite to my taste.
